Mayor
Attends Meetings Concerning
National Commission on the BP Oil Spill
and
Escrow Oil Spill Compensation
On Sunday, July
11, Mayor Mike Wiggins met with Governor
Charlie Crist and Senator Bob Graham, Chair of the National Commission
on the
BP Oil Spill. Mayor Wiggins met with
Senator Graham at Pensacola Beach
to provide input to the former Senator to aid the commission in
its
investigative work on the BP oil spill. “After my
discussion with
the Senator, I believe the Commission will do a thorough investigation
of
this
incident to insure that it does not happen again in the Gulf,”
stated the Mayor.
The Mayor met with
Governor Charlie Crist, other State and
Local Officials and Kenneth Feinberg, Independent Administrator of
BP’s $20 billion Escrow Oil Spill Compensation
Fund. “Mr. Feinberg gave the
elected
officials and the citizens some straight talk about the claims process. I left the meeting confident that the right
person was in charge and the process would work more efficiently to
compensate
those that have incurred a loss from the oil spill,” said Mayor
Wiggins.

Mayor Wiggins meets with President
to Discuss the BP Oil Spill
June 15, 2010
This morning Mayor Mike Wiggins
sat
across a picnic table from the President of the United
States at the pier on Pensacola
Beach to discuss the
BP oil spill. Mike met with the President,
along with the
Governor and other officials, to give President Obama the specifics of
the
spill’s effects on Pensacolians and to update the President on
what Pensacola
needs to help combat this oily assault. Mike explained that so far we have been
fortunate—our
beaches remain clean and our Gulf waters clear. All
of which, the Mayor explained, leads to one of the big
things that Pensacola
needs and that is to get that word out. In thanking the President for his visit, the
Mayor explained that the President’s just being here to see for
himself the
condition of our white sandy beaches and emerald waters would go a long
way to
letting the rest of the country know that Pensacola
is open for business.
However,
Mike also said that the Pensacola
area
could use as many skimmers as possible to capture oil from the Gulf
before it
hit the Pensacola pass and
our beaches. Finally,
Mike told the President that we fully support the President’s
initiative to require BP to set up an escrow-type account worth tens of
billions of dollars to assure that Pensacola and all those economically
impacted by the oil spill will be made financially whole and our Gulf
Coast will be
environmentally
restored.
